• Settled on the northern part of his father’s property

• In 1788, he was Orrington’s town treasurer

• In March 1812 at the first meeting of the town of Brewer, it was voted to raise $400 for the support of the schools in the town. John HOLYOKE, Benjamin Snow and Charles Burr were elected to be in charge of the second district, out of seven district in Brewer.

• He was a Ship Builder.

• “The heroes of Maine’s Underground Railroad from Portland to Augusta, China, Bangor and including the Holyokes in Brewer are vital characters in a new novel.” … Brewer Historical Society

John’s home was a safe-house (the underground railroad) on a bluff of the Penobscot River … commanding view or posses and slave catchers … within easy distance to Canada. There were hiding places in the attic and a 49 foot tunnel leading to the river near Free Soil Wharf. As friends to the local tribe, the Passamoquoddy would guide runaway slaves north to free territory.
