Notes for Dr. Thomas C HOLYOKE
• There was a reference to him having a middle name of “Stoddard,” although there are doubts whether this is correct.
• Said to have attended Bangor Seminary before attending Harvard College.
• Graduated from Harvard Medical School in 1847
• Was a Representative at the Maine Legislature for two years
• Practiced medicine at Searsport, ME for about 6 or 7 years, before moving to Iowa practicing medicine in Grinnell, Iowa for 23 years.
• He and Catherine are descended from Governor Robert Treat of Connecticut.
• He became interested in founding a new college in Iowa, so he joined Fev. Josiah Grinnell and two others in the purchase of 5,000 acres between Iowa and the Des Moines Rivers. In 1854, the family moved to Iowa.
• In May 1855, he and a Harry Hamlin acquired 40 acres of land in Jasper County, Iowa. In Dec 1855, he paid off in full for the land. In Dec 1855, he then acquired two additional parcels of land one at about 290 acres and the second at about 49 acres. And then in Oct 1857, he purchased another 120 acres.
• There also reference to a George E. HOLYOKE associated with Thomas and the city of Grinnel. He was the Postmaster of Grinnel in 1858.
• Thomas served as President of the Board of Literary Fund of Grinnel College
• A Trustee of the Iowa College and for several years was the Head of the Executive Committee and a gratuitous lecturer of Physiology and Hygiene; and the Trustee of the Iowa State Agriculture College.
• Like his two brothers, John and Caleb, he was a state representative to the Iowa Legislation where he served from 1861 to 1864.
• He continued to practice medicine and like his two brothers, he was president of the First National Bank of Grinnell.
