Research notes for Edward Clinton HOLYOKE Sr.
The story (not sure if this is 100% accurate, but it's the story both of my parents told me many moons ago when I was doing the Finch genealogy), is that a young unmarried Alice became pregnant and there was speculation that the father may have been either James Clifton Finch (aka Zeke, my grandfather and also Lelia's husband), OR George Holyoke (Alice's father). Both men denied it. Because of the times and Alice's age (and inability to do DNA & paternity testing back then) both men were locked up for a short time to straighten out the situation, one was supposedly sent to Bridgewater Prison and I don't recall where the other was sent. I have this all written down in my genealogy notes but they aren't handy at the moment. Anyway, Alice was sent away to Tewksbury Women's Prison (not because she was a criminal but because of the situation, and to protect her) where she gave birth to Edward C. Holyoke in 1926. The birth record was supposedly sealed due to the situation (I tried to look it up at the state archives years ago and found it was indeed sealed and was unable to access). So there was never anything definitive as to who Edward's father actually was. Regardless, he has since passed away. He had married June R. Kelly and had 5 kids, June, Edward Jr, Arthur, George, and Bradford.
