Notes for George Ward HOLDREGE
• Graduated Harvard with an A.B in 1869 … After graduation, Holdrege moved to Plattsmouth, Nebraska, and was employed as a railroad clerk for the Burlington and Missouri River Railroad Company.

• George extensively invested in Nebraska land. He owned the famous HO ranch in Perkins County and upon retirement bought another ranch on the White River, near Chadron, Nebraska. As pioneers began to settle along the land areas newly opened up by the Burlington lines, Mr. Holdrege became convinced that the railroad should become active in increasing the agricultural production of the area it served. To this end, the railroad developed an experimental farm, irrigation service, and free transportation of the grain produced to market. He hired Hardy Campbell, a dry farming expert, as agricultural agent for the Burlington Railroad.

• For years he worked his way up the Burling & Missouri Railroad Company. Then he became the General Manager of the division west of Missouri, followed by the Superintendent of operations of the Chicago, Burlington, and Quincy Railroad Company (C.B. & Q).

• Allegedly, George is credited with naming the town of HOLYOKE, CO after his son-in-law, Edward Holyoke. However, this is unlikely since Edward did not become his son-in-law until 1907, some 20 years after the incorporation of the city.

Upon his retirement on December 31, 1920, he was lauded for his pioneer efforts. Long publicly recognized as a central figure in legislative debates in Nebraska, Mr. Holdrege was awarded a "service medal" by the Lincoln Kiwanis Club in 1925. The town of Holdrege, in Phelps County, is also named for him. Mr. Holdrege died on September 14, 1926 in Omaha, of a heart attack. Although retired, he had remained active in railroad affairs.

• The town of Holdrege, Phelps, NE, incorporated in 1884 is named after George.

• Elected to the Cowboy Hall of Fame in 1965
