Notes for Dr. Edward Augustus (TURNER) HOLYOKE
• Born as Edward Augustus TURNER … In 1817 applied for a name changes and in Feb 1818 the court allowed the name change, dropped his surname (Turner) at the request of his grandfather, Dr. Edward Augustus HOLYOKE … rumor has it that in exchange for his name change, the senior Holyoke would set-up a “legacy” for all his decendants that attend Harvard. Some family folklore even says that they can attend for free, which is I suspect to be just that a lore.
• Graduated from Harvard College with BA in 1817 and with his MD in 1822.
• Was trained as a doctor by his grandfather, Edward Augustus HOLYOKE, in Salem.
• There is another story that he in-turn became an architech in Cambridge … which is unlikely.
• He moved to Syracuse, NY after his training, and this is where he applied for his name change.
