Notes for Elizur (Spouse 1)
• Elizur owned his own business and was a man of influence and wealth in Boston, and he held several local town offices and served in the legislature..
• The family lived in North Square, Boston, Suffolk, MA; next to Paul Revere's house.
• [From the book “Old Post Road” by S. Holbrook] "Among the older families resident here (North Square) were the Holyoke’s. The father (Eizur Holtoke) of the celebrated President of Harvard College, was a respectable soap boiler."
• Eizur’s shop was next door to Paul Revere’s shop. However, there are some references that state that Elizur Holyoke, Jr. was as a “brazier” (one working with brass), and some other records stating he was a “gold smith” or a “silver smith.”
• Apparently, he may also have owned a Distillery … In 1735, Nathaniel Holmes, son of Captain Nathaniel and Sarah (Thaxter) Holmes, purchased a distillery from the heirs of Elizur, which was located on what is now Salem Street, Boston.
• Elizur is also one of the founders of the Old South Church in Boston.
