Notes for Frank Holyoke BETTON
• He was a clerk in the mercantile business in Boston, MA for four years prior to 1854 and then two years in the same capacity in Petersburg, VA.
• He went to Kansas in 1856 reaching Leavenworth on 8 May 1856 and he was at Lawrence, KS when that settlement was sacked and nearly destroyed by the border state men. He spent the next year in Wyandotte and took an active part securing the territory.
• He founded the City of Pomeroy, where he finally resided.
• He was lately engaged in the manufacture of lumber for the government and railroad contracts.
• In 1873, he build a steam flouring mill, which he operated for 10 years. He was also involved in the insurance business. • He was a successful and lived in an elegant and commodious home in the little town of Pomeroy, in Wyandotte County. • He was appointed Commissioner of Labor for Kansas, an office he held for many years and was a faithful and capable official.
• In 1874 he was elected grand master of the Odd Fellows of Kansas; was also grand chancellor of the Knights of Pythias.
