• He graduated from Harvard University in 1840, and from the Divinity School three years later. He preached in Roxbury for three years after his graduation, going from there to Washington, D.C., where he preached until 1850.
• From 1857 to 1869 he was the editor of the 'Christian Examiner,' and for the succeeding eight years was engaged in teaching and literary work, editing during this period the Allen and Greenough classical series. In 1877 and 1878 he preached at Ann Arbor, Mich., and was lecturer on ecclesiastical history
• In Harvard from 1878 to 1882. In 1883 and 1884 he was engaged in professional work in Ithaca, N.Y., after which he edited the 'Unitarian Review' for several years. He was the author of many works on Christian history."
