Notes for John CARROLL
• CARROLL'S BOOT AND CLOTHING STORE. John Carroll is quite an old identity, both in Townsville and Charters Towers, and it was in connection with the boot trade that he first made his name famous. In this line he opened in Townsville first, operating for some twelve years ago. Four years later he started the Charters Towers branch, and by a thorough knowledge of the trade and a strict attention to business and to the interests of his customers he has built up a most extensive and lucrative trade. With a keen eye to business Mr Carroll recognized the fact that where profits are to be made, the more extended business the greater will be the profits; and with his mind's eye in this direction he determined twelve months ago to open also in the clothing line.
As in his boot department and his clothing department, Mr. Carroll has shown his thorough adaptability for the trade in which he embarked, and he seems to have a knack of knowing just what goods his customers require, and of procuring them always of the best quality. Mr. Carroll with his immense turn-over can afford to sell his goods at bed rock prices, and knowing so well where to buy to the best advantage, gives his customers the benefit of this.
When first Mr. Carroll commenced business in Charters Towers he had premises in Mosman Street, but he, so to speak, grew out of these, and two years ago he moved into his present commodious premises in Gall Street. Mr Carroll executes large orders, both in town and country, his country clients being spread over a large area in North Queensland, and he supplies both wholesale and retail from his extensive stock, both in Charters Towers and Townsville, his trade being a daily increasing one. The Charters Towers branch of Mr. Carroll's business was under the management and supervision of Mr. Terence Carroll, his younger brother.
• John entered St. Helens Hospital, South Brisbane, and underwent an operation, the seriousness of which will be recognized when it is mentioned that his brother Terence was summoned from Charters Towers to attend. Weakened by prolonged illness, John passed away on Tuesday afternoon 28 Nov 1904.
