• Originally intended to enter the ministry.
• A.M (Master of Arts) degree from Harvard College in 1662.
• 9 JUN 1677, applied for FREEMEN status. “Mr. John HOLYOKE of Springfield a member of ye church there in full communion: a householder and above 24 years of age desires to be admitted to ye freedome of this Colony attested ...”
• Justice of the Peace, Springfield, Hampden, MA (1687)
• Member of the Springfield Court in 1688
• Died unmarried.
• Image of Book … This unbound commonplace book was kept by John Holyoke during 1662 and 1663. The volume contains chiefly religious quotations and sermon notes (possibly of sermons preached by Holyoke himself), in English, Latin and Greek. Both ends of the volume were used to begin writing: the front page reads “Johannes Holyoke, adjunctu occupatu, May-1663” and the rear page reads “Johannes Holyoke [illegible] 1662.”
• John was the uncle of President Edward Holyoke,
• He was among the early settlers of Westfield, Massachusetts, preaching there for several months in 1667.
• Returned to Springfield after his father’s death in February 1675/6
