• He graduated from the Univ. of Maine (B.S., 1881; M.S., 1885), and Yale Univ. (M.S., 1882).
• He served as a chemist at the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station (1883-1889), and held a similar position in Illinois (1890-1894).
• In 1894 he came to the Univ. of Wisconsin as professor of dairy husbandry, and served in this capacity until his retirement to emeritus status in 1927.
• He wrote extensively on the science and chemistry of dairying and contributed to the knowledge of testing milk, butter, and other dairy products.
