Notes for Margaret GOWEN
• According to a newspaper article, Margaret was born in Cleveland, went to school in Paris, France and then moved to Kasmir, India for 7 years.”

• According to the article, while in India she married, and had twin daughters and a son. She is also recorded as saying “… she helped the Maharaja with official dinners and balls …”

• She returned to England just as the war was declared (probably around 1937). She lived in Sussex, England and turned her home into a hospital for evacuated children she took charge of, “… 22 children in all”.

• Then, there is a gap; what happened to her marriage, her children or when did she leave England ???. At the moment, I can find no information about her three children, and there is no mention of them when she married Edgar.

• She resurfaces again with her marriage to Edgar in 1942. Interestingly, Edgar had been to and returned from India in 1941

• After his marriage to Margaret, they moved to Washington D.C. and he worked with the “… Indian section of lease-lend.” Not sure if that was with the US government, or still with General Motor. That said, the newspaper article (Evening Star, 2 April 1943) that I’m referring to is a paper about social events of family members of, and members of the military.

• During 1942 to 1943, Margaret work with the Officer’s Service Club and the Red Cross District Chapter Public Relations Committee.

• The article also mentions Edgar and Margaret bought a house and furnished with “… things they bought years ago in India.”

• Margaret probably divorced Edgar Holyoke sometime around 1952 … she remarried in 1954.
Notes for Kenneth Cecil (Spouse 1)
• Served in the British Royal Field Artillary in 1914, retired as a Major.
Notes for Edgar William (Spouse 2)
• Edgar was recorded as being in the Army ROTC (Reserve Officer Training Course) in 1920 at Camp Holarbird, MD.

• From an article in the Lincoln Star, 16 Sept 1923 – “… Edgar Holyoke will leave today to motor east … and Mr. Holyoke will enter Harvard.” Then there is an article that has Edgar graduating from Harvard on 19 Jun 1925. Another article in the The Daily Nebraskan, 17 April 1934 states – “Edgar W Holyoke, who graduated from the university (Harvard) in 1923 with a degree in Business Administration was the first Nebraska graduate to receive a Master’s degree at Boston. (Harvard ???). Some of the timing seems off, but it is clear Edgar did attend Harvard.

• From a newspaper article (The Carroll Herald, Iowa Aug 27 1924) Mr. Holyoke. who had just returned from European tour, was enroute to his home in Lincoln. Nebraska, before, taking up his college work at Harvard.” Not sure if the word “tour” is referring to a military tour.

• Passport was issued to Edgar in 1924, listing he was living in Boston, Essex, MA

• There is a record from 1924 showing an Edgar Holyoke returning from Liverpool, Nova Scotia, Canada to Boston, MA; he is listed as of employees (Merchant Marine ???) are categorized as being “Cattleman” on the ship Nessian

• In 1929, Edgar is recorded as arriving in London, England aboard the Holland Ameriacn Line S.S “Veendam” ℅ General Motor Company.

• He is recorded as traveling with his mother to Shanghai, China in the 1931, returning via Seattle, WA - sailed on the S.S “President Jefferson.”

The Daily Nebraskan, 17 April 1934 – “Edgar W Holyoke, who graduated from the university (Harvard) in 1923 with a degree in Business Administration was the first Nebraska graduate to receive a Master’s degree at Boston (Harvard ???). Edgar is affliated with the Guardian Manufacturing and Supply Company in New York City in 1934. [Some of the timing seems to be off, but it is clear Edgar did attend Harvard.]

• In 1938, records show Edgar returning to New York from Coopenhagen, Belguim, which included information that Edgar worked for General Motor Company

• According to his 1940 Draft Registration, Edgar was living in New York City and he worked for General Motors.

• In 1941, records indicate he returned to New York from Bombay, India on the ship “S.S. President Monroe,” again he’s listed as working with General Motor. Additionally, his marriage license in 1942 indicated he had previouly lived in Kasmire, India.

Nebraska News Press, 20 Nov 1952 newspaper article there is a mention of a University of Nebraska co-ed, Cynthia Holyoke, as the “daughter of Edgar Holyoke.” BUT, the article also mentions that this Edgar is an Alum of the University of Nebraska, so I’m not sure if this is the same Edgar Holyoke.

• Edgar’s place of death has been recorded as being in Inyo County, California, but he is buried in South Pasadena, Los Angeles, CA, his place of residence.
