Notes for Charles Galean HOLYOKE
• Middle name has also been spelled as “Galon” and “Galen” in some records.
• Entered Bowdoin College in 1861 … residing in Yarmouth, ME
• He enlisted as a Private in Company E, 17th Infantry Regiment Maine on 18 August 1862 … although some records say 29 Jul 1862. The Civil War Pension index records him as a Sgt Major in the 17th Maine Infantry during the Civil War … promoted to Full Corporal (1864), to Full Sergeant (1864) and was wounded on 7 May 1864 … transferred on 3 November 1864 and promoted to Full Sergeant Major on same date. Then there’s another record that states he was promoted to 2nd Lt., towards the end of his enlistment. He mustered out on 4 June 1865 in Washington, DC.
• He returned to Bowdoin College in 1865 and graduated in 1668.
• Deciding to be a minister as his profession, he attended Bangor Theological Seminary in 1875; was ordained in 1878
• After some brief positions in Bethel, Vinalhaven and Phibbsburg, ME, he became the church Pastor in Edgecomb, ME from 1881 to 1891
• BURIED … In regards to where he is buried, he has two markers/tombstones – one in Brewer, ME and another in the North Edgecomb Cemetery; Edgecomb, Lincoln, ME. … I suspect he is actually buried in Brewer and his wife is in Edgcomb, her tombstone simply lists Charles’ name as a reference to her late husband.
