• Enlisted as a Private in Company F, 1st Cavalry Regiment Maine on 19 October 1861 … although some records say 3 Oct 1861 … Promoted to Full Corporal (1862) and to Full Sergeant (1863). … Discharged due to injury on 12 December 1863.
• In 1874, Horace purchased a homesteaded 160 acres of land in O’Brian County, IA
• He lived at Sheldon, where he was a deacon and active member of the Congregational Church.
