Notes for Gov. Robert TREAT
• Emigrated to America in the 1630’s with his father Richard. Settled at Wethersfield, Conn. by 1639.
• Robert participated in the settlement of Milford, in New Haven Colony.
• 1653, he represented Milford at the General Court of New Haven Colony.
• In 1654, he was named Lieutenant and Chief Military Officer of Milford.
• 1659, Magistrate of New Haven Colony.
• He left Milford in 1666 as leader of settlers who founded Newark, NJ, where he was representative to “the Assembly of East Jersey.”
• 1672, reurned to Milford, became a Major of the local militia.
• At the outbreak of the King Philip’s War, he was chosen to command the forces of the Colony of Connecticut.
• Col. Treat led his forces into Massachusetts to render aid to the hard pressed settlers there. He rescued Springfield and won the battle at Hadley. This is when & where he met Elizur HOLYOKE.
• Became Deputy Governor of Connecticut in 1676 and the Governor in 1683. Governor of Connecticut 1683-1687, 1689-1698
• From 1698 till 1708, Robert continued to serve as deputy governor.
• Trumball, a Connecticut historian, said: "Few men have sustained a fairer character or rendered the public more important services. He was an excellent military officer; a man of singular courage and resolution, tempered with caution and prudence. His administration of government was with wisdom, firmness and integrity. He was esteemed, courageous, wise and pious. He was exceedingly beloved and venerated by the people in general, and especially by his neighbors at Milford where he resided."[S:61], [S:61]
